Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

We planted carrot seeds which sprouted, but they never took off. All seedlings died. We were of course very disappointed so planted our milkweed seeds in the planters. They did very well and even sprouted. The students cared for the seeds, the seedlings and the adult plants. They watered them daily. In April, we had 27 large caterpillars that went through their metamorphosis and we were able to witness many transformations. The flaps on the side enabled us to see the roots of the plants and how far down they grow as well as how wide they spread out. This was a great project that the students loved and looked forward to each and every day. Our students truly understand the root system now and its function.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

In third grade, students study plants. They learn about photosynthesis, life cycles of plants and the identification of plant parts. This grant will enhance the science curriculum and help students to understand everything they need to know about plants.

What will be done with my students

Two classes will use these planters to plant, water and observe the growth of different plants. They will plant sweet potatoes, peanuts and carrots. The flaps on the containers will enable the students to see the roots grow and produce. Students will then be in charge of harvesting when ready. The students will truly be able to understand this part of the science curriculum through hard work, fun and observation. Understanding and comprehension is always enhanced by hands on learning. This is an amazing opportunity for deep understanding.

Benefits to my students

Students will work in the garden each day (planting and watering). They will monitor the progress of the plants. It will also be available to all students at VME to observe and learn from this process. This project could benefit over 700 students!

Budget Narrative

Each class will have 3 planters, 3 bags of soil and one watering can. Six planters are $38.00, six large bags of soil are $120. Two watering cans are $36.00.
