Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 45

Our reading spirit sticks incentive was well received by our students. Every student has earned at least one reading spirit stick for reaching a quarterly reading counts points goal. We have 16 students who have earned 2 or more reading spirit sticks for quarters 1-3. We have one quarter left and I'm confident that number will grow much higher! This has help to encourage reading in our classroom and at home. We were able to purchase enough spirit sticks to do this again with our classes next year as well.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to inspire students to read independently through the use of spirit stick incentives. This will help foster a love of reading and increase reading proficiency in our classes.

What will be done with my students

As our students finish reading books, they will take a reading counts quiz to measure their comprehension of the book. When students pass these quizzes, points are awarded by the program. Upon reaching 25 points they will receive their first Spirit Monkey Spirit Stick and ring to attach to their backpack. These are embroidered tags with different sayings related to reading. As they continue to read and pass Reading Counts quizzes they will earn additional spirit sticks to proudly add to their collection.

Benefits to my students

The expected educational outcomes with this spirit stick incentive are that, students will read a greater number of books to earn more spirit sticks. This in turn will increase their reading ability and proficiency. This project will benefit two classes (about 48 students total) and two teachers.

Budget Narrative

This budget is to request a total of 7 different spirit sticks will be purchased (in sets of 50) for a total of $197.50. These will be purchased online from Spirit Monkey Spirit Sticks. Additionally, 50 two inch binder rings will be purchased for $19.98 from Amazon for students to display their spirit sticks on their backpacks. There is no shipping cost for the binder rings.
