This grant will help our third grade students understand a large and lengthy unit about light. All Florida third graders must understand that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels from one medium to another. Also, light can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed. These are hard theories for eight year-olds to understand. This grant and the materials included will help our students to understand these difficult and abstract concepts.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

These prisms made ALL the difference in our students' learning! We were able to use them as teaching tools but also as tools for exploration and understanding. Light is a very difficult concept for third graders to comprehend. These tools made their learning much easier. Not only did our students enjoy this science unit, they also understood it.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

This grant will help our third grade students understand a large and lengthy unit about light. All Florida third graders must understand that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels from one medium to another. Also, light can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed. These are hard theories for eight year-olds to understand. This grant and the materials included will help our students to understand these difficult and abstract concepts.

What will be done with my students

The different prisms provided will be used by students in two classrooms to help them understand the above science standards. Reading about light is not enough for students to comprehend what is expected of them. They all need tools to hold and manipulate. This grant will provide those tools.

Benefits to my students

Our students will all be able to grasp these difficult science concepts and grow as third grade learners.

Budget Narrative

A total of twelve prisms will be purchased and shared between two classrooms. The total price is $94.16.
