Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 850

I chose to do an anti-bullying week in October with my leadership team. I trained that team and we had matching t-shirts so students could easily pick us out for leadership. We went on the news daily, put posters around the school, and sponsored mini poster contests for the students. Prizes were given to the best ones, but there were so many good ones. We then invited anyone who was new to the school or just wanted to go be with friends to WE DINE in a separate room every 2-3 weeks for a fun lunch time experience. They could sit and chat in an atmosphere much less chaotic than our normal lunch room, they could play games, and we even made Christmas ornaments for teachers one week. We would buy pizza or other snacks for the group, but mostly they loved strawberries with a special fruit dip.

Our entire student body was invited to participate and after our news programs, teachers would discuss with them what bullying leads to, how it can destroy people, and what it means for them when caught. We want out school to be known as having a zero tolerance for bullying, but we have to know about it to do anything about it. Kids are reluctant to rat each other out, so we put bully boxes around the school for anonymous reports. We received a few for sure, but the amazing thing was that students felt much more free to report bullying towards themselves and their friends. We could not believe how the reports increased with our awareness campaign. That was a goal well met.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To create a leadership team of students who are not afraid to stand up for what is right (i.e. welcome new students, support teachers and subs, volunteer in school and community, create a student led anti-bullying campaign).

What will be done with my students

We will meet and brainstorm ideas to help make this leadership team a positive force in the school and turn the climate into one of acceptance. They will be trained as leaders, hang unique posters about anti-bullying, have a luncheon once a month with new students, and hand out incentives to students the first day of school to welcome back the entire student body. This must be a student led initiative.

Benefits to my students

Student participants will get the best feeling from volunteering and helping others. All students will be aware of our stand against bullying and know that there are students who others can either help or know that they are being watched to shut down bullying behavior. New students can feel immediate acceptance by having lunch with and getting to know positive students before the negative crowd steps up. They will know who to turn to (besides a very caring staff) for help and advice.

Budget Narrative

This group will wear t-shirts once a month advertising who they are as well as an anti-bullying slogan.
The group will enjoy a special lunch together once per month with new students. Pizza, burgers, etc.
We will order and hang posters around the school with unique anti-bullying messages on them. They will especially be visible in high traffic areas.
Occasionally we will hand out little gadgets to other students that the group believes has helped them make strides against bullies and to welcome others.
At year's end, each group member who completes the year will receive a special prize or certificate of some sort for positive efforts.
