One of the most important aspects of learning a foreign language is culture. In order to fully understand a language, you must first understand the people living there and their customs. I have had the opportunity to learn Spanish in Ecuador, Mexico and Spain and I would like to provide my students with a similar experience, but in the classroom. The Spanish 1 curriculum is organized by country. The five countries that we will cover throughout the year are: Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Peru, and Spain. It is my goal to convert my classroom into a foreign country and provide my students with a hands-on experience and authentic products to explore.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 185

The students really enjoyed learning about the typical, artisan products (provided) from the Hispanic world. They also learned how to convert the US currency into international currencies. They purchased products around the market set up in the classroom and learned about the importance of the products to the given culture. I am now using the products to give to the students as prizes. In particular, they love the castanets. They use the castanets to play along to Flamenco music in class when we listen to it. They also really enjoyed the Puerto Rican candies.

We so appreciate your suppor of World Languages at Oakridge Middle. My students and I are very grateful to have had an authentic experience in the classroom.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

One of the most important aspects of learning a foreign language is culture. In order to fully understand a language, you must first understand the people living there and their customs. I have had the opportunity to learn Spanish in Ecuador, Mexico and Spain and I would like to provide my students with a similar experience, but in the classroom. The Spanish 1 curriculum is organized by country. The five countries that we will cover throughout the year are: Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Peru, and Spain. It is my goal to convert my classroom into a foreign country and provide my students with a hands-on experience and authentic products to explore.

What will be done with my students

One communality between The Iberian Peninsula, South America and Central America is ‘mercados’, or markets. I currently have several authentic products that my students can explore. For example, I have pesos (from Mexico) and Euros (from Spain) that the students can use when shopping at the market. I also have products that I have collected around the world, like an huipil from Guatemala. I especially like this product because there is a reading to go along with the way the huipil is made and why it is important to Mayan culture. I would like to take the market to the next level and offer a complete experience. For example, I would to buy Day of the Dead "papel picado", paintings by Frida Kahlo, a hand-woven blanket, and Marzipan candies for the Mexican market. Once the students have had the opportunity to shop at the market for this unit, I will display these items around the room on a bulletin board/table to reference throughout the year.

Benefits to my students

My students will benefit from these products because they will have a real-world experience in my classroom. They will navigate the market using the Spanish language and learn the values of the 5 different currencies. They will also have the opportunity to taste and touch items from countries around the world. Ultimately, the students will have an experience where they can connect what they’ve learned from Spanish literature to real life.
