Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 17

This grant has made my Science time amazing! Using picture books to help students learn science topics have helped them dive deeper in their learning and has helped my ELL students grasp science topics easier because the use of pictures in the books have helped them understand the topic. Some science topics that we have learned this year so far and used our picture books to help are rocks and soil, plants, life cycles, insects, matter, foce and motion, and life cycles. Using the combination of fiction and nonfiction books have helped students investigate topics even further and have helped them learn the science vocabulary. They have used the science vocabulary during labs and have referenced the picture books as we dive deeper into the topic. The pictures I have attached show how students used the life cycle books to help them build and explain the life cycle of a plant, insect, or animal. These books have even inspired some of my students to start getting more nonfiction books when they visit the media center and will even ask me if the media center has more books on insects or rocks. This grant has helped students score a proficient grade in Science and has helped support our Science Curriculum.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

The picture book libraries will be used within our science units. These books will be used during read aloud, used in small group centers, and during independent work. Having multiple books both fiction and non fiction on a concept will help students grasp their science learning goals.

Benefits to my students

The benefits for the students will be that they will be exposed to multiple picture books based on their science standards. Each picture library has 5 books both fiction and non fiction that will help students understand their science skills.
