Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 30

As a Leader-in-Me School, at Pinecrest Elementary all students are members of a Student Leaderhip Team. These SLTs met once a month. My SLT was called Pinecrest's Power Podcasters. Podcasting was new to all members of my team, so we started the year listening to a wide variety of podcasts from a website called Pinna.fm. Students used the headphones from the Podcast Mic Pack, which provided professional isolation and crystal clear sound, while boosting their listening skills. Students were encouraged to choose their own podcast, according to their own areas of interest. Some students elected to listen to online audiobooks, while others listened to short stories, Time for Kids, Joke-of-the Day, Sports News, Trivia, Game Shows and Current Events. As the year progressed, students were introduced to the basics of making their own Podcast, which included Planning, Writing, Editing, and Recording. This is where using the Podcast Mic Pack made a huge impact on the quality of our recordings. The mic picked up the students' voices while rejecting room noise and other unwanted sounds. As a team, the students decided that our "Give Back" project would be to make a podcast about the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Students. They decided to interview other students and even teachers about how they use the 7 Habits at school and at home. Students learned about interviewing techniques, tips and skills. They also used their writing skills and a great deal of collaboration to create a script for the interview questions. All in all, students learned that not only is podcasting fun to do, but podcasting supports important 21st century skills for communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Thank you for supporting this educational project and giving my students an opportunity to develop these important skills.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

As a Leader-in-Me School, Pinecrest teachers each facilitate a Student Leadership Team (SLT) in their area of passion. My team is called "Power Podcasters" and my goal is to provide my student members with podcasting equipment, so they can use their voices to create quality podcasts as a member of our SLT.

What will be done with my students

My students will be introduced to the world of Podcasting by both listening to and creating podcasts on various topics of interest. Creating podcasts has many educational benefits, including strengthening listening and speaking skills, conducting research, writing and collaboration. My intention is to walk my students through the steps of preproduction, recording, postproduction, and ultimately into publishing. Some sample ideas and uses for a podcast includes school/classroom weekly news broadcast, documenting a field trip, recording a class discussion, sharing book reviews, and reviewing curricular content.

Benefits to my students

Podcasting is one of the forefront technologies in education, offering students the opportunity to easily broadcast audio content, which students can listen to at any time and wherever they are. Students can create their own podcasts, including interviewing guests (administrators, teachers, parents, fellow students), explaining projects, leading discussions, and reporting school news (sports, weather, joke-of-the-day). A major benefit for students is an increase in engagement in the content and a sense of ownership in taking control of an aspect of their education. Lastly, podcasting requires a great deal of collaboration between students where they can question, they can contribute, and they can teach each other as they synergize to create a final product.
