Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 115

Teaching about the human body is a fun and exciting topic for students to learn in second grade. Usually when we teach this learning goal, we use cutouts that are not in color and students see videos about it. But, the aprons and the small body part manipulatives were a great way to promote tactile and visual learning. Students screamed at seeing the new materials we were going to use. They all wanted to use them and touch them and figure out where to put them in the body template. They saw how the body parts look like in 3D. They realized how each part fits in one area. Some were surprised to see and learn about other body parts they have never heard of. All the classrooms in second grade appreciated the new materials. We had enough to share and use in small groups and for the whole class. The teachers in my team were having fun wearing the aprons and teaching about it. Thank you for providing these materials that we will use for the rest of the years and we appreciate all the contributions you do for Immokalee.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Second grade students in Pinecrest Elementary will explore, identify, and manipulate human organ parts using visual and tactile resources. Students will use the tactile resources to learn this learning goal:
Learning Goal 14: Students will be able to distinguish human body parts and their functions.
SC.2.L.14.1 Distinguish human body parts (brain, heart, lungs, stomach, muscles, and
skeleton) and their basic functions.

What will be done with my students

Each class in the second grade team will share the resources (3D human organ aprons and small human organ manipulatives) to work in groups to recognize, identify, and locate the organs in the body. Students can use the aprons to locate where the organs are using as a whole group setting or small group setting. Students can use the small manipulatives to locate the organs in small groups using a body template or even as an assessment where they can identify the organ and place its location in the body and write/say its function. Students can play different games using the manipulatives such as give me a clue, where a student can give a function and the other student can point or raise the human organ.

Benefits to my students

All students benefit using a visual and tactile resource to reinforce knowledge they need to learn. Many of our students are ELL students that need a visual to recognize and locate information. It can be tiring to print or draw the human body parts and it isn't an accurate image for our students. These resources will develop a more accurate understanding of this learning goal that students need to know for science and health. These resources can also be used for our health lessons. It would be beneficial to have these reusable resources for our school to have.
