Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 15

What an awesome resource this is for my students!  They have been enjoying the online version of these readers.   The first one in which we explored was titled "School Rules".  This aligned perfectly with our Social Studies goals and reinforced what we had discussed as we came up with our own classroom rules earlier in the year.  The students enjoyed reading the text using the read aloud option, watching the "Name that Rule" video, moving to the "Dance Break" and playing the game.  They also enjoyed having the paper copy to read on their own as well.  We are so thankful for this great tool!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is for my first-grade students to receive their own copies of the weekly Scholastic News and monthly Science Spin to read and learn about a variety of engaging topics of interest.

What will be done with my students

Each student will receive a paper copy of Scholastic News weekly reader and the Science Spin monthly reader. In addition, they will have online access where they can interact with the text and explore extension activities that go along with the topic. Additionally, students will be given opportunities to respond to the text through writing.

Benefits to my students

My students would benefit from this instructional tool.
Scholastic News Weekly Readers align with the first grade standards and give the students the chance to read and learn about various topics. It goes across all curricular areas and has the ability to meet students at their current reading level. Each student will get their own copy, in which they can highlight and annotate key and interesting information. Students enjoy receiving and interacting with their own copy of the paper.

Budget Narrative

This includes a Scholastic News weekly reader and a monthly Science Spin reader as well as a digital copy for each student.
