Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 23

The gardens have been a great hands on experience for the students. They have taken on leadership roles in watering, maintaining and weeding the gardens on a daily basis. They were thrilled to plant sunflower seeds and watch them grow into giant sunflowers. They loved finding caterpillars in the butterfly garden and watch them eat their way through the plants and saw first hand caterpillars create their chrysalis and emerge as beautiful monarchs!  This has been a great experince and other teachers have also used the gardens as lessons in the plant cycles. The excitement these gardens created for learning were an experience the students will never forget!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Promote leadership roles while working in a garden. Involve students in undertaking life long experiences by working in gardens. Allow students the opportunity to work in a hands on environment and see the "fruits of their labor!"

What will be done with my students

There are 3 previously established garden beds. There is a vegetable garden, butterfly garden and a desert themed garden. Students will chose a garden and commit to working in the garden throughout the year. Students will also use the gardens to teach their 1st grade buddy class about the Life Cycle of a Butterfly, understand the growing process of vegetables, and educate other students on plant life in a desert environment.

Benefits to my students

Leadership, commitment, self esteem and hands on learning in a nature environment.
