Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 135

Students in my classroom as well as students that are part of the garden club benefited greatly of this opportunity to learn different science skills using the garden. It was a bit delayed due the Hurricane Ian but its impact has been wonderful.

Weekly, students were able to attend the garden and learn about scientific thinking and scientific measurements as they prepared small areas of the garden to plants their flowers and vegetables. One of the first things that we did as they started their measurements was ensuring that the area was big enough to sustain the growth of their product. As well, they were able to learn depending on their plant; the depth to place the seed, the lenght of time for sprouting, the distance between seed that they must observe so that it would be growing well.

They also learn to use different tools (garden shovel, garden rake, soil tester) to clean, plant and measure the humidty of thei soil so their plants will have the best condition for growth.

Because, we were only meeting weekly, at time, it was necessary to remove other falling leaves and other smal plants that were not their original seed.

My regular students will be still using the garden areas as well as we discuss diversity and interdepence among organisms. Understanding producers and consumers and also looking food chains and food webs that the garden area creates.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To expand a garden environment to allow students to study life science and use scientific tools while learning about abiotic factors that can impact living things.

What will be done with my students

During the year, as they study about living things, they will occasionally visit the garden and use scientific tools to see the impact of the environment on living things, while experimenting on plants and learn key vocabulary and concepts relating to their grade level.
Throughout the year, students can also use part of the garden area to complete scientific investigations related to plant growth (i.e.) come up with hypotheses related to plant growth, perform experiment, get data using scientific tools and make conclusion based on these experiments.

Benefits to my students

First, I believe that students will gain a better understanding of science and scientific inquiry and learning. Second, they will get a greater appreciation and interest in science activities. Moreover, students may gain a greater interest in careers related to plants and trees as well as science. Hopefully, this learning opportunity may also peak interest in job opportunities in fields probably unknown from them.

Budget Narrative

With this grant, I will be able to get more students involved with the garden club at the school site while learning bout life science, tools that scientists use and different related fields in science.
