I have used this fluency building game with my small group of struggling math students in the past and they absolutely loved it and did not even realize how much better at addition they were getting while being engaged! Since recieving this grant, over 200 of our students have been able to practice their fluency facts, which is a 1st and 3rd grade B.E.S.T. Math Standard, with this fun game! Our new math series involves a lot of games and prep, so the teachers were thrilled to be able to use these board games during math centers and fluency days which required no prep at all! Several GTE teachers also utilized these board games during our after-school program and the students couldn't wait until 4:30-4:45 to end the program with Shut-the-Box! The kindergarten and 1st grade teachers were also amazed at how well their students who played Shut-the-Box started to recognize the dots on the dice with automaticity instead of having to count each dot one at a time with their finger. I am so grateful to have so many of these games to use in the future. Thank you!!!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

As the Math Coach and Resource Teacher of Golden Terrace Elementary, my goal is to work with students across all grade levels from K through 5 to help them build on mathematical fluency, succeed academically, collaborate with their peers while finding and using their voice and expressing their learning.

What will be done with my students

The extremely engaging fluency practice Shut the Box dice game is an exciting way for the students to practice and build mathematical fluency while having fun!

Benefits to my students

As a math coach and resource teacher, I have used this fluency building game with my small group of struggling math students and they absolutely love it and do not even realize how much better at math fluency they have gotten while being engaged! If our primary classrooms had a couple of these games (for 4 players that I have not seen before!), it would benefit our Collier County title 1 GTE students immensely.

Budget Narrative

This opportunity could benefit about 200 students with fun and engaging learning! The $223.50 would purchase enough math games for all the primary teachers during fluency building math centers as well as cover the cost of tax.
