Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 551

Wow!  This grant has truly be amazing!  With the funds donated we were able to purchase games and necessary supplies for our morning math labs.  The games have increased our attendance at morning math labs drastically this year.  In previous years, we had a total of 15-20, 3rd-5th students showing up for the math lab in the morning.  The morning math labs have increased so much this year in attendance that we had to separate the labs.  Currently in 3rd grade's math lab, we have an average of 40-60 students most mornings and in our 4th/5th grade lab an average of around 20 students attend regularly.

The increase in attendance has also shown a postive increase in our data for math.  3rd grade is track to be 11% higher in math proficency accorrding to our district benchmark tests.  4th grade has shown a 15% increase in their cohort data compared to their 2021-2022 data.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to make math fun and hands on through math games that will be used in the morning math in action lab. I want to see kids excited and eager to come to the lab.

What will be done with my students

Our students at Mike Davis Elementary start arriving on campus at 7:30. School doesn't start until 8am which leaves a perfect 30 min. opportunity for students to attend the morning Math in Action lab. Games will be put out in one half of the lab to practice their addition, subtraction and multiplications facts. The other half of our lab will be set up as a 360 math lab with large white boards (which I already have) . They will use dry erase makers to practice math problems on their boards. The 360 lab allows them to see each others work and talk about strategies.

Benefits to my students

Our kids come from home where both parents are working. Making the math lab available will provide them with extra support in math. I would like to create a fun environment that the students are eager to get to school and be part of. It will feel like they are playing games with their friend yet they will be practicing math facts and growing as learners.
