Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

Students acquiring English language and with learning difficulties have had the opportunity to utilize science anchor charts around the room for daily review of concepts and support for science assessments.  As a result, science scores have increased overall, bringing students from "below grade-level" to "learning and developing" -- and in many cases, "meeting and/or exceeding the expectation" for that science standard.

The anchor charts continue to be a learning support. Students continue to reference these charts often, and this strategy has helped retain information that they have learned from prior units.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to provide students with anchor charts when learning new science concepts. Anchor charts are posters that we create that reinforce new concepts and help students process information. This can be accomplished through drawing, diagrams, and graphic organizers. These charts are then displayed in the classroom.

What will be done with my students

Students will engage with anchor charts when learning new concepts. I will use my teacher made anchor charts when introducing new topics and information. Students will create their anchor charts in small group to process the information they have learned. This is incredibly useful for drawing picture examples, information charts, and graphic organizers. For example, in 4th grade students learn about weathering and erosion. During the lesson, I will share my examples of weathering and erosion on an anchor chart. Then in small groups, students will be able to draw and label their own examples of weathering and erosion to display.

Benefits to my students

As we move onto other topics, anchor charts are a great way to review what we have already learned and students can build upon prior knowledge to connect with new information.
Anchor charts will increase vocabulary, and provide concept/ environmental print for processing and recalling information. This is especially beneficial for students learning the English language and for students that have learning difficulties.

Budget Narrative

I will need a total of 9 Post It Easel pads, and each comes in a pack of 3 for $38.56. Therefore 3 sets will be required to supply anchor charts for the school year. A class set of Crayola markers cost $59.98. Items will be purchased via Amazon Prime, so there is no charge for shipping. The total before tax is $175.56 and estimated tax is $12.30. The grand total is $187.96.
