English Speaking Union - Naples Branch - $347.80
I come to work every day with the goal of creating a learning environment for my students that is engaging, exciting and energetic. I want my students to love learning and cultivate a love for reading so big that they can’t wait to walk through the door every day. One way I do this is through the collection of books I make available to my students daily.
I have been blessed over the last 15 years of teaching to have acquired many different types of chapter books, all of which are available for students to check out and take home as they please. I believe that one of the most powerful ways to increase a child’s reading level and their love of reading is by having them read daily. For many students, reading is not often seen as pleasurable, and finding the right type of book to engage them is key to getting this reading routine started. Graphic novels are very popular with students currently and I would like to grow the types of graphic novels I have available for check out in my classroom library.
Graphic novels can be described as “novels using images, as well as words, to tell a story.” This genre includes so much more than the comic books it is usually associated with, and the popularity of graphic novels is on the rise with readers of all ages. The interest in graphic novels is very high with my students, but unfortunately the selection in my library is very low. Graphic novels meet the needs of all readers. They are engaging and approachable for reluctant readers while challenging them with higher vocabulary and inferencing through the illustrations. The selection of graphic novels I have listed span various reading levels and cover many different areas of student interest to help provide choice for all.
These various graphic novels will be used to encourage independent reading in my classroom. They will be available for any student to check out and read throughout the year and some even integrated into our yearly reading and history units.
