Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 19

This project helped my students with their writing skills, but more importantly with their compassion. These third graders love to write when they know they are going to be helping a dog or a cat (even a guinea pig or a rabbit) get a home. We were able to go to visit the Humane Society on May 22.  It was a very informative and fun trip for the students! They met many staff members and learned about their jobs. They were given a tour of the facility and were able to see most of the animals that are up for adoption. Some students were able to locate their recent writing and art. This group of students understands how to write in the first person, how to write persuasively and how to care for those in neeed. They will never forget this incredible project. Thank you for making it possilbe!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My students will increase their writing skills while also helping animals get adopted from a local shelter.

What will be done with my students

Last year, I worked with the Naples Humane Society to help animals get adopted with the aid of my students. We will do the same this year, but make it even better and more effective! Students are given information on an animal that needs adopting. They then write a letter as if they are the animal and why they should be adopted. Their work is displayed next to each animal's kennel or room for potential adopters to read and help fall in love with that animal. We will do this once every three weeks. At the end of the school year and project, I will take my students on a field trip to the Human Society so they can see some of the animals they are championing for. It will make their writing more meaningful. The attached picture is a sample of what they did last year.

Benefits to my students

My students will be become better writers and better humans through this project. They will learn how to write more effectively and develop compassion at the same time.
