Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 80

Thanks to the donation, all of our 5th graders were able to have access to the 2022-2023 Sunshine State Young Readers Award Books. These 15 specially selected books expose students to different reading levels and genres of text. We encourage our students to read most or all of these books, keep a record of who has read which book, and have a friendly competition. All of 5th grade tracks which books they have read with special stickers that have their name on them. For every book they read, they get to place their name sticker on the poster for that book. They also get individual bookmarks to track the books they have read. For each completed book, they get that book marked out with a hole punch.

Here is a link to a video 5th grade students made for the school news to spread awareness and excitement awareness about the books and incentive.

Students who read all of the books get to go on a special trip with our media specialist at the end of the year. They look forward to this trip all year!

Having the ability to purchase these books early in the year meant that ALL our students were able to start reading! Thank you!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

We would like to have a class set of the 15 Sunshine State Reader books for each 5th grade classroom. We have four groups of students and need to purchase 60 total.

What will be done with my students

Our students will be able to have access to the books chosen at a state level. They range in Lexiles (reading levels) and there is something for everyone. Our students are very excited because we track our reading progress through bookmarks and a bulletin board that we mark each time we complete a book. If students read all 15 books by the end of the year, they also get to go on a field trip and are awarded the opportunity to purchase even more books!

Benefits to my students

Our students love to start reading these books as soon as we start off the year. The list benefits third through fifth graders and we would also share our copies with the other grade levels once a book has circulated through our classroom. Students may also do book studies or projects focused on these texts.

Budget Narrative

The cost of one set of class books is $178. $178x4 sets of books for all 5th graders= $712
