Glenn & Lisa Church - $220.00
My goal is for students to become comfortable and fluent with counting money. They will practice the 2nd grade math money standard through an enjoyable experience with our classroom general store.
Students will earn coins throughout the school day. They earn money numerous ways through class assignments, participating in class discussions, and helping other classmates.
Students will get to exchange their coins once a week. If a student earns ten pennies, then they will exchange their coins for either two nickels or a dime. This helps students understand different coin combinations, practice skip counting, and identify coins. Once students earn enough coins, they can exchange their coins for paper bills.
Every week students will have the chance to visit the class general store. Items are marked at different prices in the store and students get to decide what items they spend their money on. These items range in price and will appeal to all students. When students go to the store, they get real life practice with giving the right amount of money for an item along with making sure the change they get back is the correct amount.
The benefits of the classroom general store and class economy are widespread. Students are engaged in class activities throughout the day in hopes of earning coins. The general store promotes positive behavior. Students will practice practical life skills of saving and spending their hard-earned money. They may choose to save their money for more expensive items or buy smaller cheaper items. Saving and spending is a second grade Social Studies standard that they will get to experience with the general store. The general store helps improve my student’s math fluency with both addition, subtraction, and counting money.
These items include the play money students will earn, count, and spend. The items that will be in stock at the general class store, which have an array of appeal for students. Much of the budget goes to the items students will spend their money on. I want to make sure I have enough items to keep the store running throughout the school year and give every student the opportunity to buy items. Sandwich bags will be the students bank accounts. They will leave the money in the bags until they visit the store.
