Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 90

This grant allowed all of the second-grade students at Parkside Elementary to experience hands-on experiments and activities related to science. The materials bought through this grant made the 2nd grade science units more interactive and engaging.  The human body unit came alive by having students blow up balloons like lungs and create bones with playdoh. They also got to enjoy edible dirt with the soil unit and learned about the different layers of soil. Science standards taught became more meaningful because students got to experience the content.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to provide science materials to the second-grade classes at Parkside Elementary. My goal is to allow students to experience science with a hands-on approach.

What will be done with my students

Students will be using these materials throughout the school year for different science units and experiments. Students will experience the effects of the sun through UV beads and evaporation with chalk experiments. Students will learn and research different habitats. With these materials students will get to create dioramas of the habitats. They will learn about the human body comparing lungs to balloons. Play-doh and straws will be compared to bones and muscles. Students will also learn about weather and wind through different experiments.

Benefits to my students

Students will have a better understanding of science standards by getting to experience and practice these concepts with hands-on experiments. Student engagement and interest will be increased. Student learning will be enhanced through exploration using these materials.

Budget Narrative

UV beads will be used in the sun unit.
Balloons will be used in the human body and motion units.
Play-doh will be used to learn about physical change and bones.
Twine will be used with balloons and straws to show motion.
Students will use chalk to experiment with evaporation on the side walk.
Cups, paper plates, and straws will be used in different experiments ranging from cloud in a cup to creating a wind vane, and plants.
Habitat boxes will include the materials crepe paper, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, color tissue, and animal sticker book.
Push pins will be used during the wind unit to create wind vanes.
Clear plastic cups will be used in the state of matter and cloud in a cup experiments.
