Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 110

Students have been able to get our of their seats and work in collaborative groups to solve mathematical problems. Students have thought outside of the box and have begun to learn how to work with new people. We will continue to expand these skills next year through the same methods!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is for my students to do more collaborative thinking and less mimicking what I do.

What will be done with my students

Students will have the opportunity to work at whiteboards in groups to collaborate on mathematical problems. To begin the school year, I have placed shiny paper on the walls that is being used as temporary whiteboards for groups to work at. These will not last long! The groups students work in are random and change daily. We have been doing non-curricular problems to get students used to working in groups at the whiteboards. Soon we will shift to curricular problems that will help students understand what they are learning. My project is based on the book "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics" by Peter Liljedahl. This would be a long-term project that would span many school years and would help many students become better at math!

Benefits to my students

Students get the chance to work with others and learn from others. They get the chance to get out of their seats and have a little more fun that just sitting and "getting" from their teacher. They should be able to develop better, deeper understanding of the mathematics, share ideas and solutions, and have a more exciting time doing so!

Budget Narrative

4 mobile whiteboards that measure 40x24 inches (are magnetic) and are two sided; $105.99 each. I have priced these on Amazon.com (with Prime pricing/free shipping). The tax is estimated to be $29.68 for a grand total of $453.64.
