We have been improving communication at Sea Gate Elementary this year using the Kaufman Card Treatment Kits! These kits have been used with approximately 20 students in grades K-2 including the general education and modified curriculum populations with severe speech sound disorders. Kids have been engaged with the colorful pictures on the cards and the hierarchy of sounds to produce. The kits have been easy to utilize and have helped improve overall motor planning for clear articulation of words learned. The kits have been effective in breaking down sounds and syllables into a simpler format in order to easily learn sounds patterns to form words. A few of my students that were nonverbal are now articulating 1-3 words when communicating. The students are so proud of their progress and it is truly amazing to see! Thank you so much for fulfilling this grant and allowing our students to have a chance to have their voices heard!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Communication is everything! My goal is to help my students improve their speech skills by using the Kaufman kits to teach them how to develop consonant and vowel combinations in order to form words. This evidence based approach will help my students improve their overall intelligibility and become effective communicators with their friends and teachers at school.

What will be done with my students

My students will be taught how to combine consonant, vowel, and syllable shapes in order to form words. My students will follow the hierarchy of the kit and continue to achieve success with forming new words to add to their vocabulary. This will lead my students to begin to combine words together into phrases and sentences. I want my students to feel confident as they share their wants and ideas with their friends and teachers at school!

Benefits to my students

Using this approach will give my students the opportunity to learn how to combine sounds to form words, increase their vocabulary, and improve their overall communication abilities at school!
