My students will learn about the traditional art form of the Mandala. Throughout the year, students in my art program, learn about the beautiful and rich world of multicultural art. They create works of art that helps them better understand the cultures’ art and traditions. Students are better able to learn about the traditions, ideas and reasons why different cultures create art, which is an important part of art appreciation. As an extension to creating a design in the likes of the Mandala, they will be on display in the Media Center where students and their peers can view their masterworks!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

My second semester Art students were enthusiastic and excited to create their mandala art project.  The students were introduced to the history of the mandala and its meaning.  As a group, we discussed how we can "modernize" the traditional mandala that it can be more relatable to them.  Discussions were had on how each mandala can be personal in the choice of line, pattern and color.

It truly has been a great experience for all of my semester students to be involved with this project.

Thank you on behalf of Manatee Middle Art program,

Maryann Clark, Art teacher

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My students will learn about the traditional art form of the Mandala. Throughout the year, students in my art program, learn about the beautiful and rich world of multicultural art. They create works of art that helps them better understand the cultures’ art and traditions. Students are better able to learn about the traditions, ideas and reasons why different cultures create art, which is an important part of art appreciation. As an extension to creating a design in the likes of the Mandala, they will be on display in the Media Center where students and their peers can view their masterworks!

What will be done with my students

Students will view the traditional Mandala and use these as an inspiration to create their own masterpiece.
We will focus on the Principles of Art. The key principle focused will be Balance. Students will discuss the importance of Principles of Art and how it is relatable to their art piece

Benefits to my students

My students will benefit from this project because they will gain in-depth knowledge and appreciation for a culture they may possibly never learn. They will also gain a respect for the time and the artistry that goes into creating these pieces.
The connections my students will be making will be through a variety of ways.
• Art: This lesson is an excellent opportunity to bring in some of the elements and principles of design to encourage students to apply what information they already know.
• Math: This lesson will tie in how students work out mathematical problems. (Measuring / symmetry)
• Installation: Each class will be provided with a 6x6 square. The students will create a sense of organization with their piece. It will give the ability to control their color choices as well as achieve a visually appealing collaboration.
My students here at Manatee Middle are learning about becoming leaders in our school as a part of a wonderful program, The Leader in Me. An important part of this program is to know that we all belong together and what better way to start is with school beautification. When students have the chance to display their artworks in a public area, it will help them gain a sense of pride in the fact that their artwork makes our school a more positive environment and will redefine all of our student successes.
