Lunch activities that keep students involved and focused on achieving small crafty projects are a phenomenal tool to increase mutual collaboration, motivate young people to share the process of making something, as well as the joy to decorate a product they can donate to others. The goal is to involve students who are at the edges, who do not normally talk to others, who tend to be shy and do not socialize with anyone else. Making bracelets, drawing a Valentine card, painting rocks, or getting busy with any other mini-project, pushes these students to be more interactive, to see that others share their tastes, their styles, their insights, to learn from others how to do things differently and open up to them. Hands-on activities open the mind and...the soul!
The students who come to Room 3-140 every Wednesday for the "WE DINE TOGETHER" Club meetings will be involved in a "Dine, decorate, and share the joy!" activity to be proposed every 3-4 weeks. Indicatively, the following list includes:
- Rock painting
- Halloween cards and makeup
- Thanksgiving wooden decor + pumpkin signing
- Christmas ornament painting
- Bracelet beading
- Valentine cards
- Paint your own snap together button
- Paint a canvas bag or a T-shirt.
Even students who tend to be withdrawn and do not easily socialize with others will benefit from showing their skills, or learning skills from others, while engaging in hands-on activities. During lunch time such activities will enable the students to produce crafts they can either keep or donate to others.
Last year I spent my Club Advisor's stipend to experiment: it was absolutely worthwhile. I was able to observe the dynamics disenchained by simple hands-on crafts. After eighteen months in total or partial isolation due to the pandemic, young people were looking forward to "doing something." Decorating brings joy to the eyes and to the soul, gives purpose, provides a sense of "well-being," and makes people bond by watching each other and learning from each other.
The budget list includes the basic materials necessary to accomplish small crafty projects. Students will be able to make these items at lunch time and share their skills, besides learning from each other.
THANK YOU for supporting this initiative! Should you want a bracelet, a rock, a button, or other item to be crafted for yourself, let us know! It would mean a lot.
