Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 525

This addition of 3 electric keyboards and 6 piano stands made it possible for all of the students at Lake Park Elementary School to learn at the same time.  Last year we did not have enough pianos and some of the students had to sit and wait for their turn.  By adding these pianos this year, everyone could participate at the same time and never had to wait.  It was also very helpful that every piano in the room was now the same, and when an idea was taught to the students, the piano that was referenced was the same for everybody.  When giving instruction to 25 or 26 students at one time it is necessary to point out things (marks) on the piano that they can all see and find.  This was the 2nd year of keyboard instruction at LPE.  It was great to see how fast students could recall what they learned the year before and then add to it.  Our beginners started by finding combinations of 2 and 3 black keys.  Our most advanced students, now 4th & 5th graders, are now reading musical notation and are starting to figure some things our on their own.  This program will move into its 3rd year next year and I have to say that we are really off to a great start on having the students develop a love of music that will last a lifetime!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would like to have enough keyboards and stands so that every students could have their own instrument to use in class without having to share with others.

What will be done with my students

Last year's "Keys to Future Success" grant was an incredible learning experience for the students. It was expanded to include all students in our school, not just the 3rd thru 5th grade students. With class size in some classes as high as 26 students, it was necessary to have some students share keyboards so that everyone could experience learning to play the piano. By adding 3 keyboards, all of the students in each class will be able to learn at the same time. All of the students will be participating in this program for the 2nd year. The kindergarten students will be introduced to the keyboards for their 1st year of playing the piano.

Benefits to my students

Research has proven that playing a musical instrument is a healthy exercise for the brains of the students. They are using both sides of the brain at the same time. Their brains are processing at least five things simultaneously. Learning to play the piano at this age is something that they will know for their lifetime and will continue to build on and improve each year they are at Lake Park Elementary School.

Budget Narrative

These keyboards and stands are the same equipment that we already have and make our functional for all the students at the same time.
