Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 285

Thank you so much for funding my ‘It’s Limited Edition!’ grant at Herbert Cambridge Elementary. This grant impacted all our students in different ways. The 5th grade School Store Leaders embraced their leadership by using their creativity to help design, market and sell our limited-edition items. They grew as leaders when they would help others count their ‘Otter Bucks’ and help them decide what they could purchase at the school store, or if they wanted to save for a limited-edition item or another more expensive item. They became pros at customer service. The other students worked hard in their classrooms and were motivated to earn ‘Otter Bucks’ to shop the school store, especially when there was a new limited-edition item.

After some research and observation at the beginning of the year, the first limited-edition item was a customized water bottle. Students either came to school without one of their own or lost it while at school, so we designed a custom Herbert Cambridge Elementary bottle, that also encouraged students to drink the recommended amount of water each day. It was a hit! The School Store Leaders then designed a very limited-edition school store hoodie, this one has encouraged younger students to want to follow in their footsteps and apply to be a school store leader in the future. Our favorite and most popular limited-edition item was inspired by a student who wants to be a ninja when she grows up, so in conjunction with kindness month we created a HCE Kindness Ninja T shirt. This one became so popular that we could not keep up with production and needed to take orders, that we worked as a team to fulfill. It was awesome to see the halls of HCE filled with Kindness Ninja shirts, and fun to incorporate kindness activities with the same theme.

Thank you again for supporting this grant and Herbert Cambridge Elementary. I feel that the grant met its goals with the added bonus of building relationships and community among students from different grade levels, and it added a bit of fun and excitement to our incentive program and school store.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The Fifth Grade School Store Leaders at Herbert Cambridge Elementary will motivate students to follow school expectations, be engaged learners and develop qualities of good citizenship through earning and saving 'Otter Bucks' to purchase specially created limited edition items.

What will be done with my students

1. Fifth Grade School Store Leaders will research, and design limited edition items.
2. School Store Leaders will work hands on to create each limited edition item.
3. School Store Leaders will price and market limited edition items. Marketing will include the teaching and reinforcing of classroom and school wide expectations.
4. Students in kindergarten-5th grade will earn 'Otter Bucks' by following classroom and school expectations, engaging in classroom activities, focusing on their work, showing kindness, and helping fellow students.
5. Students will have an opportunity to save their Otter Bucks and shop the limited edition items when they 'drop'.

Benefits to my students

This idea was brought forth by the School Store Leaders themselves as we brainstormed ideas to make the items in the school store more motivating for other students. One of the most important benefits for these students is to see an idea that they voiced become a reality. The school store leaders will have a unique experience of researching popular items and students' interests. They will have the opportunity to design and create special items such HCE t-shirts, back packs, pencil cases and water bottles. These leaders will also practice merchandising, customer service, and money management (Otter Bucks) while working at the school store on a weekly basis.
The other students will learn and practice following school expectations leading to more positive behavior choices and classroom engagement which will improve focus and learning. Each Otter Buck earned will reinforce a positive behavior. Students will also learn to be patient and save their Otter Bucks for something special.
