Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1000

The “Fence Flower project” was a combination of staff, modified curriculum students and art student input. Students used red clay slabs to create textured flowers we put 4 holes in the center of the flowers so that we could use zip ties to adhere to the courtyard fences. The students worked cooperatively as each class created, glazed and added the flowers to the courtyard fences. The courtyard was transformed into a beautiful, positive and bright space for all the students and the school’s community.

With this generous grant we decide to create a fun, art filled outside classroom where all classes are invited to use.

Thank You!

You made a difference in the culture of Oak Ridge Middle School

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students (and/or family event) will design, create, and install colorful ceramic fence flowers, giving them personal designs. The fence flowers will be installed in a public space on the school’s campus. The fence flowers will be part of the schools “beatification initiative” that will demonstrate how art connects us to each other, the community, and the world!

What will be done with my students

Then they will use clay to create flowers and after they are bisque fired they will glaze the flowers that will be installed on the school campus. Students and families will be encouraged to think about the installation space and the impact on the viewing audience. The students and families will be asked to incorporate age-appropriate color theory to create unified flowers. Once the students’ family’s flowers are glazed and fired the students’ families will find the perfect spot in the decided area where they will plant the fence flowers-- in public art installation. Lastly, the artists will enjoy and experience the power of their contributions of art to their community.

Benefits to my students

Public art is a Form of Communication. Art projects come and go. Ceramic fence flowers are here to stay. They are a legacy, a means for students, staff, and stakeholders to communicate from generation to generation. Ceramic art installations are an artistic dialogue serving to provoke and inspire present and future student populations. Art installations speak to school bodies. Students and families will learn about careers that are available for creative people including public art. They will learn how as artists they can create installations that will translate into publicly displayed works of art. Students will understand and experience the power of publicly displayed art by seeing first-hand how their creations affect others. Oakridge Middle School family will be able to enjoy the fence flowers as a permanent art installation and enjoy the flowers for many years of come.
