Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 19

My students love this resource!  They love having their own papers to mark up and read.  They learn so much from each of these weekly readers!  The readers align wonderfully with our science and social studies goals, and they are a super tool for learning text features, which is something we work on throughout the entire year.  They enjoy the online version of these readers as well.   They can use the read aloud option, watch the videos, move to the "Dance Breaks" and play the games.  My students are so engaged with both the paper copy and as they use the digital access. We are so thankful for this great tool!  Thank you so much!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is for my first-grade students to receive their own copies of the weekly Scholastic News and monthly Science Spin, to read and learn about a variety of engaging Social Studies and Science topics of interest.

What will be done with my students

Each student will receive a paper copy of Scholastic News weekly reader and the Science Spin monthly reader. In addition, they will have online access where they can interact with the text and explore extension activities that go along with the topic. Additionally, students will be given opportunities to respond to the text through writing. These will be incorporated into ELA, social studies and science.

Benefits to my students

My students would benefit from this instructional tool.
Scholastic News Weekly Readers align with the first grade standards and give the students the chance to read and learn about various topics. It goes across all curricular areas and has the ability to meet students at their current reading level. Each student will get their own copy, in which they can highlight and annotate key and interesting information. Students enjoy receiving and interacting with their own copy of the paper.

Budget Narrative

This is a year subscription for the 2023-24 school year. It will provide a class set of both the paper and digital version of the Scholastic News and the Science Spin.
