With my class set of books, we are going to have the opportunity to dig into our reading standards on a more practical level. Since a few of my students read the book Tales of Despereaux last year, we switched up our book set to be Holes. Majority of my students have not read this book, but they are excited to dive in! We have so many activities alligned to our standards that go along with this book, and I know it will keep the students engaged! So thankful for this grant!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have a class set of 25 books of The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo for the 2023-2024 school year.

What will be done with my students

The hope would be to start our novel study on this book by October 2023. We will use our knowledge of all our ELA standards to break down and study specific parts of the book. A novel study creates great opportunity for students to work on their context clues, identifying character traits, analyzing the plot, and understanding authors claim and purpose. All of these skills have been taught since they have been in third grade, and doing a novel study applies it to real life!

Benefits to my students

I believe that all of my students will benefit from this project. Novel studies are great for all level of kids and a great way to expand their comprehension of text and their fluency in reading.
