Our goal is to promote student engagement in art education by offering them the opportunity to study and draw from real-life three-dimensional forms. By incorporating casts and sculptures into our art curriculum, we aim to develop students' artistic skills, creativity, and critical thinking abilities. This project aligns with grade-level competencies and standards, specifically addressing the importance of observational drawing, proportion, and understanding of form and structure.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 24

Ninth graders in Studio Art 1 at Naples Classical Academy, were the first to be able to study these drawing casts and take their time examining the anatomy, the way the light hits the different planes of the face and features, in a relaxed an concentrated way. Though drawing a portrait from while looking at a real person, is an important part of classical art study, arranging for enough portrait models and setting up for this is more than the multi-grade art classroom can handle at the moment. Having a carefully selected collection of plaster and resin casts not only helps us learn about portraiture, but we can also bring art history to life. Several of the casts I purchased with the grant funds are copies of classical sculptures by Michelangelo, Donatello, and other master artists.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to promote student engagement in art education by offering them the opportunity to study and draw from real-life three-dimensional forms. By incorporating casts and sculptures into our art curriculum, we aim to develop students' artistic skills, creativity, and critical thinking abilities. This project aligns with grade-level competencies and standards, specifically addressing the importance of observational drawing, proportion, and understanding of form and structure.

What will be done with my students

The grant will be used to purchase a diverse range of casts and sculptures that represent various subjects such as human figures, animal forms, and architectural elements. These resources will be integrated into our existing art curriculum across multiple grade levels. Students will engage in activities that involve close observation, analysis, and rendering of the sculptures through drawing exercises.
In addition to fostering technical skills, this initiative will encourage students to think creatively and express themselves artistically. By studying three-dimensional forms, students will learn how to translate depth and volume onto a two-dimensional surface, enhancing their spatial awareness and compositional abilities. The casts and sculptures will serve as visual references for our students, inspiring them to explore different art styles and techniques.
Furthermore, the integration of these resources into our curriculum has the potential for permanent integration. Once acquired, the casts and sculptures will become valuable assets to our art program, benefiting the current cohort of students and future classes. They will serve as a foundation for continued exploration and learning, providing a lasting impact on the artistic development of our students for years to come.

Benefits to my students

The expected outcomes of this grant-funded project are multi-faceted. By engaging with the casts and sculptures, students will:
Develop observational skills: By closely studying the three-dimensional forms, students will enhance their ability to accurately depict objects and understand their visual characteristics.
Improve technical drawing skills: Through regular drawing exercises, students will refine their understanding of proportion, form, shading, and other fundamental drawing techniques.
Cultivate creativity: The casts and sculptures will spark students' imaginations and enable them to think beyond the literal representation, fostering innovative thinking and artistic expression.
Enhance critical thinking: Analyzing and interpreting the sculptures will encourage students to think critically, make visual connections, and develop conceptual ideas.
Foster appreciation for classical art: The inclusion of classical casts will expose students to historical and cultural artworks, deepening their understanding and appreciation for art history.
To assess the impact of this project, we will evaluate student engagement and learning outcomes through formative assessments, student reflections, and portfolio reviews. This will provide a comprehensive evaluation of their progress and growth in terms of technical skills, creative thinking, and knowledge of art history.

Budget Narrative

The requested grant amount of $2,000 will be allocated as follows:
Purchase of casts and sculptures: $1400
This includes a variety of high-quality casts and sculptures representing human figures, drapery, and animal forms. These resources will provide a diverse range of subjects for student exploration.
Storage cabinet: $300
A secure storage cabinet is essential to preserve and organize the casts and sculptures. This will ensure their longevity and accessibility for both students and teachers.
Shipping costs: $300
Shipping the casts and sculptures to our school is necessary to bring these valuable resources into our art program. This expense will enable us to have the materials readily available for student use.
The use of funds directly aligns with the expected benefits of the project. The casts and sculptures are the primary tools for student engagement and learning, while the storage cabinet and shipping costs contribute to the long-term preservation and accessibility of these resources.
