Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 500

The browsing bins have made such a difference in our school library.  It has made it easier for  students to choose books and helped empower readers to be able to independently SUCCESSFULLY browse for, and find, books that they want to read.  The circulation statistics have improved greatly in the library!  Books that have not been checked out in a very long time are circlating agin!  All students are able to utililze the library effectively ans students no longer feel overwhelmed by rows and rows of book spines.  I was looking for ways to make the library more accessible, more enjoyable, and easier to navigate INDEPENDENTLY.  These bins hve made that happen in our Shadowlawn Library!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to entice students to leave the library with a book that interests them, in their hands. Ideally, multiple books!

What will be done with my students

As a media specialist I want too try to make it easier for our students to choose library books that interest them. In order to do this my plan is to ditch the outdated shelving strategies that have long been synonymous with libraries. You know the ones I mean… the row after row after row of book spines in perfect lines, squeezed and crowded onto the shelves. Where you look at the stacks or rows and its just a sea of uninspiring sameness. I want to be able to front face out library books in easy accessible baskets. It’s because seeing those colorful, engaging illustrations on the covers of board books, picture books, chapter books, and even nonfiction books draws children in much more strongly than the spine of a book.

I have already done this with the nonfiction and series books in the chapter book sections and have had great success. We have had great success and circulation did increase. I am wanting to finish the rest of the library. I am asking for browsing baskets to be able to finish this transformation.

Benefits to my students

Making it easier for students to choose books will help empower readers to be able to independently SUCCESSFULLY browse for, and find, books that they want to read. Displaying books with the covers facing out provides children who can’t yet read an insight into the content of a book, especially helpful when you’re trying to entice kids to read new, unfamiliar books. It also makes it much easier for reluctant readers to choose books and it generates more attention and interest and encourages browsing. Front facing books creates a warmer, more personable experience for readers.
