Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 400

All 8th grade students in the state of Florida take the Statewide Science Assessment.  This tests them on content from 6th, 7th and 8th grade.  We spend a large part of the 4th quarter reviewing 6th and 7th grade science benchmarks.  This grant has allowed us to infuse a little more fun into the sometimes tedious task of review.  We were able to purchase review task cards on 18 heavily tested areas including human body systems, plate tectonics, weather, forms of energy, waves & sound, etc.  These were printed on colored paper to match the colors on the Jenga set.  The rules were pick a card.  Get it right, they pull a block and earn a point.  Get it wrong, lose a turn.  Get it right but the tower is about to fall?  You can choose someone else to pull a block but they earn the potential point, not you.  If it falls, -10 points.  Most points after the tower falls earns a treat.  Students look forward to this review game!  Thank you Champions for helping to make it happen!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our 8th grade students will review tested benchmarks from Earth/Space, Life and Physical science for the State Science Assessment.

What will be done with my students

Students will work in small groups playing Jenga. The Jenga sets have multi-colored blocks (purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red). When a student wants to choose a certain color block (let's say green), they will choose a green task card with a review question on it. If they get the question right, they are able to then attempt to move their block and earn a point. The player with the most points at the end and does not knock down the tower wins!

Benefits to my students

This will allow students to engage in a fun game with review, work as a team, and apply some of their knowledge of physics to not knock down the tower.

Budget Narrative

I am requesting 6 Jenga sets (1 for each group). the task cards for the review content and colorful paper to match the Jenga sets as well as laminating sheets to protect them for multi-year use. Can be shared among all 3 8th grade science teachers for review.
