The goal for my student is to recognize and produce rhyming words, which will help improve their reading and writing foundational skills. This is especially important for struggling students and English language learners, as they often need support with reading and writing. By working on rhyming in such a fun way, they'll develop the skills to be successful every day!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

My kindergarteners think this Rhyming Rocket game is a BLAST!! I have utilized it in so many ways: whole group, small group, extra support for my ELL students, and as a spelling challenge for my highflyers too. Some of my students were struggling with this skill earlier in the school year. This game was just what they needed to keep my them engaged as they practiced this skill. They are now able to not only identify rhyming words but also create rhymes on their own.  My students rhyming skills are now soaring in their reading, writing, and spelling since using this game.  In fact, on free choice Fridays they ask to play again and again! I also share it with my co-teacher and her students have a blast rhyming too!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal for my student is to recognize and produce rhyming words, which will help improve their reading and writing foundational skills. This is especially important for struggling students and English language learners, as they often need support with reading and writing. By working on rhyming in such a fun way, they'll develop the skills to be successful every day!

What will be done with my students

Rhyming is fun for Everyone! These Rhyming Rockets will be used after reading stories and poems by table teams during our literacy block to practice their rhyming skills. This activity will also be used as an extension to a reading lesson by individual students who may need extra practice by reinforcing knowledge of beginning and ending sounds, and syllables. I will also use the Rhyming Rockets to challenge students to spell the picture rhymes they have sorted, and then have them write sentences using the rhyming words they have spelled.

Benefits to my students

Rhyming is a fun and an incredibly powerful tool to explore language. As my students play with rhymes, they will build their phonemic awareness. These cute rockets and colorful pictures will keep my kindergarteners engaged as they identify sound patterns and help them recognize that words with similar sounds often have identical spelling patterns too. This knowledge will help my students' confidence soar helping them enjoy reading and writing even more!

Budget Narrative

I will purchase this game using my Amazon Prime account so there will be no shipping charges.
