Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 80

This year, I created a Humane Society Club to include volunteers from all grade levels. It was exciting to see how many students joined the club. More people became aware of the need to help shelter animals and that was the goal. Most students were in the third-fifth grade. We wrote poetry for the animals and letters for potential adopters. Writing skills were enhanced and learning more about poetry was a great bonus. Tons of art work was done also. A field trip is planned for the end of May for my homeroom class (20 students). This has been a great project and so much gained from it.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My students will increase their writing skills while also helping animals get adopted from a local shelter.

What will be done with my students

Last year, I worked with the Naples Humane Society to help animals get adopted with the aid of my students. We will do the same this year, but make it even better and more effective! Students are given information on an animal that needs adopting. They then write a letter as if they are the animal and why they should be adopted. Their writing and artwork is displayed next to each animal's kennel or room for potential adopters to read and help fall in love with that animal. Once adopted, the student's work will go home with the adopter. We will write each month. At the end of the school year and project, I will take my students on a field trip to the Humane Society so they can see some of the animals they are championing for. It will make their writing more meaningful. The attached picture is a sample of what they did last year.

Benefits to my students

My students will be become better writers and better humans through this project. They will learn how to write more effectively and develop compassion at the same time.
