Goal

My students will be able to name the five vowels and
produce both the long and short vowel sounds. My students will also be able to differentiate between them and identify objects whose names contain long and short vowels (phonetically). My goal is to help my students to "owl-ways" love reading!

 

What will be done with my students

Vowels of a feather gather together to make phonics and word recognition a hoot! My students "owl-ways" enjoy working with their table team mates during our literacy block. Pairs of students will sort the cards into the correct owls labeled with the vowels. They will distinguish long from short vowels in single-syllable words using engaging picture cards. I will also use this game to challenge students to record their Vowel Owl word groups, to choose a word from each Vowel Owl to write sentences, and/or to create more long/short vowel labeled pictures. This game will also help me support small groups of students that are struggling with differentiating between the vowels and their long and short sounds. The cute owls and colorful pictures will help engage my English language learners as short vowels are often more challenging for multilingual learners because they are unfamiliar sounds.  

Benefits to my students

It is essential for my kindergarteners to be exposed to the power of vowels from the earliest stages of their reading development. It will enhance their reading skills by
helping my students to spell and to identify and learn new words. Having an understanding of long and short vowels will help my students decode, blend, and build fluency that will strengthen their foundation for reading and writing the English language.
