Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 400

Thank you so much for funding this grant! Being able to utilize games to teach social skills to our students at NPE has been very valuable.  When working with students one-on-one, it has allowed students to be more comfortable to share their thoughts and feelings.

In small groups, it has helped students to communicate in ways that help them successfully work together with others, share, problem solve and celebrate.  I believe practicing these skills has helped the students utilize these skills more effectively and frequently inside and outside of school.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students in grades K-5 will be able to apply social skills while playing board games and having fun.

What will be done with my students

In order to reduce conflict and promote a sense of belonging and positive peer interactions, I'd like to teach students social skills through board games. Students will have the opportunity to practice skills in small group or one-on-one with the school counselor.

Benefits to my students

Students will be given an opportunity to practice their social skills with their classmates outside of the classroom. We all know practice helps to bring about improvement in our behavior. My hope is that students will be able to apply and practice the appropriate social skills in small group and be able to transfer their learning to school and at home.

Over the years, I've noticed students have traded in board games for video games. Many students have never played board games. In my opinion, they are missing out on opportunities like: compromising on what board game to play, taking turns, problem solving, socializing with others in person, using kind words, celebrating others' success and many more. I want students to enjoy the experience of playing the games, but also facilitate the game in a way that they learn the importance of communication and impulse control.

Budget Narrative

I would like to purchase the games listed above to provide students a variety of games to play. These games can be reused year after year.
