Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 657

We are so thrilled with the way our Glow Literacy Night turned out, it was beyond anything we had imagined.  We are extremely thankful to Champions for Learning for making our grant wishes come true.  The smiles on the kids' faces said it all!

We had six literacy stations set up throughout the cafe and realted arts classrooms.  In addtion, the art teacher got involved and in her room she hosted a glow art show featuring art from our fourth graders!  We even got Immokalee High School involved and they sent over both BETA memebrs and football players to help.  While BETA students spread out and helped at all stations, the football players came right from practice in their jerseys and read to our students in a glow room.  With the added help from the high school volunteers our teachers were able to devote the time to teach the students and parents fun and easy activites they can do at home to practice reading.

As a result of the grant we were able to make literacy fun by tracing glow letters, playing glow phonics hopscotch, making glow eyeball reading trackers and glow retelling bracelets.  We also played glow grammar basketball and went on a glow scavenger hunt for synonyms.  Every kid that walked in the door was also given a glow stick bracelet so the rooms really came to life.

Again, thank you for all you do to support our school!  We could not be happier with the way this project turned out and the impact that it had on our school community.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have students engage in a unique multi-sensory approach with the 5 components of reading during our annual literacy night.

What will be done with my students

Students and their families will be given the opportunity to visit several GLOW rooms and participate in glow in the dark literacy activities. The activities include glow letter/sound hopscotch and glow sensory bags for the younger ones, as well as, unscrambling invisible ink sentences and invisible ink vocabulary scavenger hunts for the intermediate grades. There will also be activities targeted to all ages including a giant neon scrabble game and a glow in the dark read aloud room.
Some of the materials are reusable and can be repurposed after our literacy event to create glow literacy opportunities in individual classrooms. For example, when 4th grade reads about the Mariana Trench and the fish that live in the deep a teacher could transform their classroom into an underwater glow reading experience. Or we could reuse the materials to have a glow dance party to celebrate reading goals.

Benefits to my students

Our students and families will benefit from the opportunity to experience the 5 components of reading in a fun and multi-sensory manner. They will see that learning and reading can be fun. It will leave them with memorable experiences that they can connect to their classroom instruction. These type of experiences help to build neural connections and file learning into long term memory.

Budget Narrative

My budget includes the expense of the black lights needed to make the room "glow" and all of the materials needed to create the activities for each of the glow rooms.
