Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 230

Cells are super important to understand how living things work and how cells work together to create more complex life forms.  There are many different types of cells that each have similar and different parts.  Students were able to create diagrams of cells on the shrinky dink plastic and label the different parts for a better understanding of how cells can have multiple organelles.  Students could easily see the similar structures of cells as well as the differences.  Each structure inside of a cell has an important function that helps that cell survive and maintain homeostasis.  Creating shrinky dink diagrams was creative outlet for students while learning about the cells.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to provide students an engaging way to interact with cells. Although cells are microscopic, this activity will allow students to work with cells in a hands on way without microscopes.

What will be done with my students

During the cell unit, students will be able to draw out a model of a plant or animal cell. They will color and label it. Then we will magically shrink them in an oven (by an adult). They will then be able to turn them into a keychain that they can reference.

Benefits to my students

My students will be able to make connections between the concepts in the classroom and concepts in the real world. More parts of their brains will be activated and engaged. The knowledge gained will be more easily transferred to long term memory. This style of learning also fosters growth of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students love to create things and this the perfect activity for students to create projects to gain understanding. This activity lets students take a lead and control their learning while it still being fun and engaging which will benefit all students including ELL students that need extra support.

Budget Narrative

I will use the money to buy 4 sets of each item so each teacher will be able to do the activity with their students buying; shrink film paper, keychain set, and poster for display.
