Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 6

This grant had such a great impact on my students with disabilities. Students were able to make indpendent choices about what meal they wanted to make/eat. Students helped pick out items in the grocery store as well as store the items in the correct place. Students learned how to cook various types of meals. Students were assisted in the kitchen at all times to ensure safety. One of my students even learned how to cut potatoes! Some other skills they learned were: using the air fryer to cook chicken, using the stove, putting together sandiwches, cutting their own fruit. Every year this grant never fails to impact to my students. Most of my students do not get opportunities to make their own choices when it comes to picking out a meal and then cooking it. This grant gives them this wonderful opportunity toward choice making, independent living and various culinary skills.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is for students with disabilities to gain life skills as well as independent functioning skills, specifically cooking/preparing basic meals.

What will be done with my students

Students will be grocery shopping for items with picture supports. Students will then learn how to properly store purchased items in their homes and how to properly cook/prepare these meals in our classroom kitchen. Students will learn how to prepare basic meals following a picture recipe. Students will gain a real-life authentic experience as if they were cooking in their own kitchen.

Benefits to my students

Students will benefit from learning basic cooking skills. My students will have to leave the CCPS Transition program at the age of 22. I want to get them ready for life functioning skills. My students need to know how to care for themselves as independently as possible. Cooking and preparing meals is a basic need every individual must acquire to survive.
Being able to successfully and independently prepare meals for oneself will build self-confidence and a sense of independence. Every adult with a disability deserves this.

Budget Narrative

We will use this money to help students purchase various items from the grocery store that they will prepare in the classroom.
