Goal

I would like to purchase a class set of lab coats for my students to present a project to a small group of NCH professionals at the Judith and Marvin Herb Family Simulation Center at NCH. These students are considering careers in health care and "dressing the part" has proven to have a very positive impact!

What will be done with my students

My Project
I am requesting lab coats for my high school health care professions' students. My program is designed to expose students to the diverse field of health care professions available to them in their future. In the second year of my program I have them work in "surgical teams" to develop a plan to separate two year old conjoined twins. They choose form five areas of specialty based on their interest: pediatric cardio-thoracic surgeon, pediatric gastroenterologist, plastic surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, and a pediatric vascular surgeon. The case student they use is based on a successful separation done several years ago, in which the surgical team that completed the surgery used scans stored/presented in an anatomage table.

My students visit the Simulation Center at NCH to manipulate these scans using the table, as they develop their strategies for surgery.
After time for research and planning, my students return to NCH and present their ideas to a panel of NCH staff members including oncologists, a pediatric specialist, an ER Physician, and several medical students completing their rotations.

As they present their surgical plans, they don lab coats with name tags identifying them as professionals in their filed, for example, "Dr. Chavez, orthopedic surgeon." This will be the second year I have done this (I bought lab using my own money and then returned them). I can tell you it was a HUGE success on many levels. This year I would LOVE to have a permanent set of lab coats that I can use with subsequent classes.

Benefits to my students

The ability for students to interact with professionals in their areas of interest is of enormous benefit. This project asks them to solve an example of a real world surgical task. Having them "dress the part" was not only fun for them, but it made them feel very professional! They were terrified to speak to professionals despite my reassurances. When all presentations had been completed, they could not stop talking about how "it was the best project ever!" They impressed the staff a great deal, as I assured them they would, as I saw the work they put into the project!

Budget Narrative

These lab coats ($513.30) allow students to experience the look/feel of the health care professionals as they present to NCH staff members.
