My main goal is for students with special needs to learn how to cook meals for themselves successfully and independently. I want to give my students a chance, like any other student, to learn how to properly cook a meal. I also want my students to have the opportunity to learn how to successfully make a grocery list, find items they need at the grocery store and pay for items at the grocery store.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 14

This grant had  an enormous impact on my students with disabilities. Students were able to make indpendent choices about what meal they wanted to make/eat. Students helped pick out items in the grocery store as well as store the items in the correct place. Students learned how to cook various types of meals. My students learned how to cut peppers and strawberries. They learned how to cook hamburger meat, make homemade pizzas, work an oven, how to safely handle raw meat, how to cook eggs, how to use a blender, how to make pancakes and how to make breakfast tacos. My students had the opportuniy to go to Chick fil a and Outback steakhoiuse. The majority of my students had nerver been to either place. My students learned how to read a menu, how to order food in a clear, loud voice and how to behave in a restaurant. Most of my students do not get opportunities to make their own choices when it comes to picking out a meal and then cooking it. This grant gives them this wonderful opportunity toward choice making, independent living and various culinary skills.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My main goal is for students with special needs to learn how to cook meals for themselves successfully and independently. I want to give my students a chance, like any other student, to learn how to properly cook a meal. What will be done with my students

My students will pick out their food items of their meal choice from Publix and successfully cook a meal (s). Cooking meals throughout the school year is an ongoing, weekly activity. Each week the students will have to decide on their meal of choice. My students will cook a variety of meals. For example, one week they can cook their breakfast of choice and another week lunch, dinner, and so forth. Students will work individually and as a team to prepare and cook a meal.
Once a semester we will be going to a restaurant of choice in order for my students to have the opportunity to practice paying for meals.
