Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

The goal of this project was to encourage students to read at least 10 of the 15 Florida Sunshine State Young Readers - a collection of chapter books chosen each year in the state of Florida that are considered to be good selections of literature for students. I encourage students to read these each year to challenge themselves, practice and improve their reading fluency and read books that they probably wouldn't have chosen on their own. With this project, 11 out of the 18 students in my class have read at least 10 of the books! Those who did not achieve that goal still read at least 5 or more which was also recognized in our class as an accomplishment. All students were inspired to read with the addition of the Book Taco website that offered comprehension activities, games and ways to track reading minutes with a fun twist. The students used Book Taco at school and at home and would often choose it as their primary online reading activity when given a choice. All students participated and made vast improvements in their comprehension throughout the year as shown by their state FAST testing results. Thank you for the opportunity to give my students this unique motivational program this year!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to encourage all students in my third grade class to read this year's Sunshine State Readers during the school year and pass a reading comprehension test on each book.  

 

What will be done with my students

Students will be given access to all 15 current Sunshine State Readers to read throughout the school year. As a student finishes a book, they will be given special access to the website "Book Taco" which has comprehension tests for all of the Sunshine State Readers as well as other activities that will motivate students to read. The website will track success for each student as the year progresses. To further motivate students, I will host a special Let's "Taco" About Books celebration at the end of the school year for all who have finished at least 10 of the 15 books. This celebration will include a book talk with a special lunch of...tacos of course!  

 

Benefits to my students

My goal every year in third grade is to foster a love for reading in every way possible so that each of my students leaves my class knowing how much joy reading can bring. I have always wanted students to understand that although we will work to become the best readers we can be in order to be successful in school, we should also understand that reading can bring so many other things to us beyond the classroom. Using this project, I want my students to experience the excitement of reading books they might not have chosen on their own as well as have a goal to reach that has an amazing reward (tacos and talking!) that will give them the fun push to achieve it!
