Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

The Garden Club of Lake Trafford Elementary truly appreciated the soil donation! Without soil, there are no plants, and without plants...there is no Garden Club. The donation of soil was used to pack our garden boxes and plant a number of different plants including pumpkins, beans, bananas, and peppers. Over the course of the school year, our club has been able to watch the plants grow from seeds to mature plants. Our club has been able to harvest our plants and enjoy the benefits of healthy, nutritious food!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of purchasing soil is to use it to fill our Earth Boxes with healthy, organic soil good for growing a variety of vegetation.

What will be done with my students

Each year, the Garden Club fills six Earth Boxes with quality, organic soil and grows a variety of vegetation such as fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Students get to watch the life cycle of a plant in real time and learn about germination, pollination, and seed dispersal of plants. Students get hands-on experience with growing a plant from a seed to maturity which relates back to the science curriculum as well. Students haul the soil, lay the soil, plant seeds and seedlings, and tend to the garden year round.

Benefits to my students

The life cycle of plants is a large part of the science curriculum across several grade levels. My students will get to see fertilization, germination, pollination, and seed dispersal in real time with the seeds they grow themselves. This provides a hands-on learning experience that cannot solely be taught in textbooks. Additionally, the soil purchased will help ensure that the plants are as organic and healthy as possible so that students get to experience the "fruits" of their labor!

Budget Narrative

Each Earth Box holds 2 cubic feet of soil and our school has 12 Earth Boxes. We need one bag of soil per Earth Box. Each bag of soil is $9.97 a piece, plus tax, which is calculated for the 12 bags. The price of 12 bags of soil plus tax comes to $127.42.
