I am proposing funding to help purchase a class set of soprano ukuleles for the students at Sabal Palm Elementary. Students will use a variety of ukulele resources, including our district Quaver curriculum, to learn basic ukulele playing techniques, chords, and ukulele pieces and songs. Through ukulele playing, they will also develop a deeper understanding of musical concepts such as meter, beat, rhythm, notation and styles of music.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

The ukulele project was an amazing experience for our fourth and fifth grade students at Sabal Palm Elementary School this year. Our students were able to learn proper instrument care, proper posture and playing techniques, how to read a ukulele chord chart and a variety of songs using different notes and chords. They had a chance to create their own songs with the knowledge they learned during our project and perform their song for the class.

As the project finished, I have had many students ask where they can purchase their own ukulele, so they continue learning more at home and enjoy sharing their musical experience with their family and friends. The ukuleles that were purchased were not only be a wonderful experience for our current students but for the fourth and fifth graders for years to come. Thank you for providing such a wonderful experience to the students at Sabal Palm Elementary.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I am proposing funding to help purchase a class set of soprano ukuleles for the students at Sabal Palm Elementary. Students will use a variety of ukulele resources, including our district Quaver curriculum, to learn basic ukulele playing techniques, chords, and ukulele pieces and songs. Through ukulele playing, they will also develop a deeper understanding of musical concepts such as meter, beat, rhythm, notation and styles of music.

What will be done with my students

With the funding from the grant, I will be able to provide a hands-on experience of playing a string instrument to my students. Lessons will begin with teaching the students the proper handling and care of the instrument. Students will then learn the correct playing position, strumming techniques and correct left-hand placement. Once the basics are learned, students will learn the purpose of frets and how to play melodies and chords. At the end of our ukulele unit, students will demonstrate their new found ukulele skills by performing as solos, in small ensembles and in large ensembles.

Benefits to my students

The ukulele is a wonderful instrument for 4th and 5th grade students to play. It is the perfect size for a “first” string instrument. Once they learn basic ukulele techniques, my students can go onto middle and high school to play orchestral instruments, the guitar or continuing on the ukulele. Students will gain many musical and non-musical skills from learning melody and harmony to focus and discipline. The most important benefit for my students is to promote a life-long love of music.

These ukuleles will not just benefit the current students at Sabal Palm Elementary but for many students in the years to come.
