Original Grant Overview
Goal
Students with exceptionalities will build legible and functional printing skills in order to show measurable changes using child centered techniques, materials and concepts as evidenced by completed written expression assignments.
What will be done with my students
The Size Matters Handwriting Program (SMHP)
is an evidence-based approach to teaching and remediating handwriting. The students will be taught to focus on letter size versus letter form. The research completed by the developer has shown that correcting letter size makes an immediate and visible difference in the consistency and appearance of a student's writing. The student will learn about the 3 different letter sizes: Size One (tall), Size Two (short), and Size Three (hanging) letters. The student will become familiar with Go lines and Finish lines to correct reversals along with writing from left to right. In addition, the student will learn spaghetti and meatball spacing. Positive reinforcement will be given to the student by receiving awards for star worthy letters. In addition, the student will have the opportunity to learn to draw shapes (for math and illustrations) along with proper scissor skills. Lastly, a pre and post assessment will guide remediation of handwriting skills along with data to evaluate student growth.
Benefits to my students
The Size Matters Handwriting Program will increase a student's self-confidence and writing ability. The student will learn about letter size in a fun and engaging way. Despite the world moving more and more towards technological advances a child still needs to be able to write, and someone needs to be able to read it. This fun and engaging curriculum will help students become confident and proficient writers.
