“There are three teachers of children: adults, other children, and their physical environment.”
— Loris Malaguzzi

Malaguzzi believed in a child-centered, early childhood educational philosophy with the desire to create an environment that acts as a "third teacher." The Seacrest Early Childhood Team believes in this important philosophy and extends the learning environment from the inside classroom to the outdoors. This grant aims to provide a sandpit area with provocations in the outdoor Early Childhood Play Area.

The durable outdoor toys and experiential play materials give the children hands-on exploration as they prepare for their futures as botanists, paleontologists, construction workers, farmers, or any of a thousand other careers. Plus, sunshine and fresh air make for happy children! Thank you to Champions for Learning for funding "The Third Teacher."

Original Grant Overview

Goal

“There are three teachers of children: adults, other children, and their physical environment.”
— Loris Malaguzzi

Malaguzzi believed in a child-centered, early childhood educational philosophy with the desire to create an environment that acts as a "third teacher." The Seacrest Early Childhood Team believes in this important philosophy and extends the learning environment from the inside classroom to the outdoors. This grant aims to provide a sandpit area with provocations in the outdoor Early Childhood Play Area.

What will be done with my students

The Early Childhood Team at Seacrest Country Day School values the outdoor play area as a "Third Teacher." Each day, the Preschool and pre-kindergarten children explore the outdoors and engage in important, unstructured free play. Providing children with a sandpit and a wide variety of provocations will allow them time to use their imaginations, develop fine and gross motor skills, and enjoy cooperative play with friends.

Benefits to my students

*Use time outdoors to improve physical and mental well-being
*Take appropriate risks while exploring outdoors
*Create social and collaborative relationships through teamwork with peers
*Enjoy imaginative, creative, unstructured play
*Further develop fine and gross motor coordination
*Make "real world" connections

Budget Narrative

The grant requests sand and various provocations, including measuring, constructing, and imaginative play items. All requested supplies will be purchased through Seacrest's Amazon Prime and Home Depot accounts; therefore, the purchases will be tax-exempt.
