Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 100

The Champions for Learning grant for the Lit Camp Green Bunk will continue to be a beneficial program for Seacrest Country Day School's Lower School students. This school year the program was piloted a part of the Second Grade enrichment experience. Lit Camp Green Bunk engaged students in meaningful literature in a shared learning environment. This program created a collaborative literacy journey for students to come together as a community to explore the seven (7) strengths of belonging, courage, confidence, curiosity, kindness, friendship, and hope. We celebrated how the students applied these strengths in their everyday lives. Thank you, Champions for Learning!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

This grant request is for purchasing the LitCamp Green Bunk Kit for 3rd and 4th Grade students. LitCamp is a literacy enrichment program that cultivates students' confidence and aptitude for reading, critical thinking, and making real-life connections. LitCamp stories are purposefully curated to enhance the "Seven Strengths of a Super Reader"--belonging, curiosity, friendship, kindness, confidence, courage, and hope. Implementing LitCamp into the Seacrest Country Day School literacy curriculum aims to set students off on the LitCamp Trail, where reading becomes a meaningful, life-long adventure.

What will be done with my students

The LitCamp program supplements the current literacy curriculum and directly connects the Seacrest Core Values to the ELA goals and objectives. The LitCamp curriculum includes a teacher guide, 300 high-interest trade books (20 copies, 15 titles each), and student folders. Lesson plans integrate reading instruction with social-emotional learning themes. Students are encouraged to read, think, and make personal connections between story characters and real-life experiences. LitCamp includes pre- and post-assessment rubrics to assess student reading progress. Shared inquiry discussions provide teachers with anecdotal evidence of students' development of the "Seven Strengths of a Super Reader."
