The mission of the fishing rod building club is to give students an opportunity to explore a trade or hobby and empower them to teach others.
As part of our club, there is always a give back project and ours will be to donate a rod that we have built to the Take a Solider Fishing Tournament that is held annually.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

The Fishing Rod Building Club was a newly offered club this year, thanks to Champions for Learning! Students (grades 3-5) meet once a month. The club members just finished adding the rod seat and reel to their pole. Next meeting they are working on the eyes of their rod and some other finishing details. The club members are very excited to finish the rod and have a day to meet up at our beautiful beaches and put the rods to great use! Students also made a rod to donate to Take a Solider Fishing which is an annual event in our community.

This has been an absolute learning experience for myself and the students. We have 3 "dad" volunteers who come in to meet with this club and have taught us so much about fishing. The club has been the talk of the boys in the school and so many are wondering how they can join. I am hoping next year we will be able to offer this club to more students. Thank YOU Champions for Learning.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The mission of the fishing rod building club is to give students an opportunity to explore a trade or hobby and empower them to teach others.
As part of our club, there is always a give back project and ours will be to donate a rod that we have built to the Take a Solider Fishing Tournament that is held annually.

What will be done with my students

As a Lighthouse School, we give students the opportunity to meet with a club to work on something they are passionate about. Each year, I try and think of unique opportunities for students to learn about a life skill or trade they can consider as a future career. In this club, students will build a fishing rod and learn how to fish successfully.

Benefits to my students

Living on Marco Island, this is a recreational activity more students should have the opportunity to participate in. Students will learn the life skills of using a cast net to catch bait, fishing with the rod they built, and how to research the rules and laws of fishing in the state of Florida.

Budget Narrative

The budget above will cover the cost to buy the kits needed to build the fishing rods. Many parts within the kit can be reused each year when a new group of students start the club.
