Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 125

Third trhough fifth grade students have benefitted from the use of Magnetic Reading books as supplemental instructional material that supports their mastery of grade level reading standards.  Through the use of these short passages, students are building their stamina to read more lengthy passages on district and state assessments.  They are implementing close reading strategies needed to respond to text dependent questions and written responses.  They have been successful with these lessons as they target specific strategies and provide ample practice to aid students' comprehension. Teachers offer struggling students scaffolded support until they can acquire a gradual release model to become proficient readers.

These materials are also targeting "bubble students" in third grade based on formative assessment data.  With the structure they provide, students who are perfomring slightly below grade level can catch up with their peers. Our guest interventionist works daily with Magnetic books in small groups to provide the needed review of grade level standards that students need to master.

Struggling students in fourth and fifth grades also benefit from the textual support to increase their reading proficiency.  These students utilize the books daily on targeted reading skills to help to be successful.  In some cases, below grade level magnetic reading materials are used in order for them to close learning gaps before they can become independent readers on grade level material.

Thank you for extending us the opportuntiy to spend grant money to purchase these consumable materials for our intermediate students.  Your continued support has made an incredible difference.  As students grow in their reading confidence and literacy skills many doors will be opened to them in the future.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to increase reading proficiency for ALL students. Magnetic Reading, Florida B.E.S.T. Standard Edition, will provide an additional layer of comprehension support for students in grades 3-5. Based on the Science of Reading, this approach provides scaffolded instruction for students to build background knowledge and vocabulary necessary to equip students with the tools and strategies required for on grade level reading. With these research based literary resources and small group targeted instruction, struggling students can achieve fluency and comprehension needed to become lifelong readers.

What will be done with my students

The Magnetic Reading supplemental program is designed to facilitate lively classroom discourse with grade level content using culturally diverse texts while they master critical reading skills. Although not used as our primary instructional tool for intermediate students, through differentiated, standards based instruction, every students' reading needs can be addressed, including those with specific learning disabilities and bilingual learners. Students track individual reading growth and teachers reflect on student performance to make necessary reteaching/enrichment opportunities available for students. This practice equips them with data to drive their instruction, diminish students' learning gaps, and increase learners' overall reading achievement.

Benefits to my students

The purpose for this grant is to provide students that are reading below grade level with access to high quality, on grade level reading material about content that is appropriate to their age and interests. Students are exposed to variety of texts, including both fiction and nonfiction passages throughout the program. Magnetic reading lessons are directly aligned with the B.E.S.T. standards and compliment our HMH core reading program to support student' literacy growth. Thank you for your consideration and donation to purchase these supplemental resources for our most struggling readers! Our future reader leaders will benefit from your continued generosity!
