Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 30

This Sensory Tools for Learning classroom grant impacted a wide variety of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Developmental Delays, ADHD, and various Learning Disabilities. These sensory tools increased the student’s ability to stay regulated during classroom instruction. The students had the opportunity to fidget with the bouncybands, therabands and foot cushions while seated verses getting out of their seats for additional movement breaks. The rocking chairs provided alternative seating for students who need constant movement to maintain attention and focus during classroom instruction. The sensory strips helped to provide a fidget that does not become a hand held distraction. The students in pre-kindergarten loved the sensory book to learn letters and numbers while improving fine motor skills and providing sensory input. The fidget tools gave students the deep pressure feedback to get their hands ready for writing or other table top activities. Overall, this multi-sensory approach helped students to participate to the best of their ability in the educational environment.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

By utilizing sensory tools for learning, students with exceptionalities will demonstrate the ability to calm and organize their body in order to actively participate in the academic environment.

What will be done with my students

The sensory tools for learning will be provided to the student based on individual needs and preferences. These tools will help calm the student's body and mind in order to sit in a chair/desk, participate in classroom activities, play with their peers and attentively learn.

Benefits to my students

The sensory tool(s) will help students regulate their body throughout the school day. It will also provide them with socially acceptable replacement behaviors rather than engaging in maladaptive behaviors. The benefits of these tools for students will be seen across the educational environment by increasing attention, comprehension, regulating emotion, and sensory processing skills, which in turn will greatly impact their ability to learn and grow.
