Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

The impact of my grant Sustainability and Creating Environmentally Conscious Students will be felt for years to come. My students have been learning how to make better soil with worm composting. They have been so excited that they are bringing food scraps from home to add to the worm's compost bin. Learning which foods help the soil and how fast the worms can decompose certain foods and get a good health balance.  The soil from the worm composting and worm tea will be used to help classroom plants and trees at our school.  My students are so interested in our new worm friends and they love to journal their process.

Thank you for helping to bring life to projects where students learn much more than a curriculum can teach them. To be environmentally conscious students and learn how to make better soil to grow food is a powerful skill, I'm able to teach because of your generosity. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I want my students to learn about Vermicomposting, or worm composting, to turn kitchen scraps and other green waste into a rich, dark soil that smells like earth and feels like magic.

What will be done with my students

My students will set up a vermicomposting container and will go out weekly and put in their left over vegetable scraps to make really good nutrient filled soil. Students will maintain the composter themselves and learn first hand how worms play a big part in the health of the soil. They will make weekly observations of how the soil is changing, and the activity of the worms.

Benefits to my students

Vermicomposting will allow students to work on not being so wasteful and to care for our planet. Vermicomposting will teach students how to care for our soil and what it takes to have really great soil, and who our the major players are underground making all the magic happen. Twenty students will benefit from this request this year, but it will serve many students over the years.
